I suggest you ...

Have adjustable mouse sensitivity for waking the menu

Prevent the menu from popping up unexpectedly by requiring more than just a graze of the touchpad or other input device.

That is a good idea. I will play with a higher threshold. In general though, I want to make sensible defaults, rather than exposing unnecessary options to the user.

May I suggest only showing the menu if the mouse moves 18px away from the writing body? That way, mouse navigation within the text is easily possible, but the menu will not appear while the user is writing.

i would much rather have a menu that never opens accidentally, disrupting my writing, than one that opens just by moving the mouse. what's wrong with just clicking once anywhere above the text box? or how about having to run pointer the way to the top of the screen or at least the top of the page. i just touch the mouse and the menu appears on this little netbook.
